December 3, 2017 - Restore & Strength: A yin yoga and functional strength workshop

At YBC®, we are firm believers in balance. We believe yogis benefit from strength training, and weightlifters benefit from yoga. The two truly complement one another.

One of the most functional movements the body performs is a full squat. When done correctly, a squat strengthens the core, spinal erectors, glutes, hip flexors, hamstrings, and quads. In addition, range of motion improves within the hips and ankles, as well as athletic power for lifting, jumping, and running. For a yoga practitioner, the main benefit of this functional movement is to create stability and strength within the hip joint itself. Warrior poses and balancing poses become easier as you increase strength within this major joint. In addition, developing strength may help take the practice to the next level and prevent injury, as you begin to rely more on strength and less on hypermobility.

In this workshop, we are going to work the yin and the yang - the yoga and the fitness. Here's how it will go down:

  • YBC's® strength and conditioning coach Dan Tavino will lead the group through an air squat and push up seminar. You'll learn the points of performance for an air squat and push up, and then we will all move through a short but intense HIIT workout. We'll spend about 30-45 minutes on this portion of the workshop.
  • Afterwards, Candace will lead the group through a delicious restorative yin practice using bolsters, blocks, and blankets. Restorative yin is one of the best ways to open up tight areas in the body, so this will feel especially good for anyone with tight hips, chest, shoulders, or legs. This portion will last about an hour and half or so.

Please bring: your yoga mat and an eye mask (or headband that you can use as an eye mask).
